Cosy, connected, and timeless



Don’t wait for Summer. Here’s some of my top reasons to love this season for your next family session.

If I am completely honest, Winter sessions have a big place in my heart for more reasons than just a bit of trickling water that may dot about through the Perth Hills.


There are some huge benefits always worth discussing. The more obvious ones, like earlier sunsets, which mean earlier sessions for the kids. (Hello normal bed time!) You don’t have to run around organising as many snacks for that time of day. A lot of my clients over the winter period even have the slow cooker on with hot food ready as soon as they walk back in the door! Or the opposite, make a night of it and head out for dinner afterwards. Both convenient. Both smart thinking.


Rich earthy colours and saturated areas from rain can bring out whole new tones in the landscape. Whatever backdrop you choose for you session, it will likely look different to what it would come summer. Greens become deeper, and the golden grasses still dried from last season remain to catch light - should you be blessed by some lovely sun! Colours are a little more muted, a little more emotive - which I have a huge love for.


No sun? No worries… really… at all.


The clouds over winter act as a huge soft box throwing the most beautiful soft light, specifically showing off skin tones in their natural beauty. More even skin tones straight out of camera? A win-win for all of us! Winter clouds, fog, and smoke from nearby fires add mood, depth, and a little extra cinematic feel in your photos. A little drizzle? That just makes it more fun.

Need I actually say more?


If I must… these things all add up to a much cosier setting in your photos. Everything naturally feels more cuddly and close - drawing in connection, and let’s be real here - you would all rather snuggle in close to each other when it’s not scorching hot out!


The light is lower, for longer, welcoming an extra long golden hour if there’s no cloud cover!

Did I mention more comfortable temperatures?


The only downside - in my opinion - is if it does become an unfavourable manic weather day. I think it’s okay to assume nobody wants pouring thunderstorms for their photos, and honestly my gear doesn’t want to see it either!


Worried we will hit rain on the day? I simply leave wiggle room in the calendar to reschedule to the nearest clear one we can all make. 

One last thing. Most importantly.



This hurts me in the mum heart to even write it.


Your kids will be another 6 months or closer to a year older maybe, by the time you book that “summer shoot”. Don’t skip the window if they are a beautiful sweet age you want captured now. These seasons are fleeting. They change rapidly, and every little stage of them growing deserves celebrating and capturing with you in the photos too.
